GATEKEEPER'S PROMISE
Book 1
Widows' Walk Trilogy
by Lee Emory

Accused of the worst violation a teacher can face, Brittany is determined to
redeem her good name and save an important piece of history at the same time.
But her opposition is strong, arrogant, wealthy, and too attractive for his own good.
How can she convince him to change his plans when she can't even convince her heart to ignore the urgent message it's sending?

Jeff Ryerson, M.D. must convince a city council and the professor that erecting his medical facility is far more vital to the community than saving a crumbling old courthouse.

Despite their differences, he's becoming putty in the hands of the history professor who carried a dark secret with her to Cherry Hill.

Plans begin to unravel as the matchmaking ghosts of Cherry Hill cause Jeff and Brittany to question their very sanity.

Today in Cape Gleason on the Oregon Coast...

In life, the three women had little in common but their self-imposed widowhood. One had been a Regency lady of quality, one a pre-Civil War southern belle, the third, a gold panner in the Yukon. Because they all had provocation for dispatching their husbands, they still have a chance for heaven if they serve out their purgatory by matchmaking solid marriages on earth. Their next assignment: Bring together Dr. Jeffrey Ryerson, who just bought the town's old courthouse to raze and build a fertility clinic; and history professor Brittany Engles, who has been asked to help in the battle to conserve the historic structure. Each has a strong reason to win the fight. In Jeff's case, he has already sunk eleven million dollars in the project, and in Brittany's case, she needs to polish her unfairly tarnished reputation. Jeffrey and Brittany first meet upon their rainy arrival at the Victorian era Cherry Hill Inn. They are the only guests in the eerie inn with the distinctly odd staff of three.

Parts of GATEKEEPER'S PROMISE worked for me. I liked the original premise of the trio of disparate ghost widows, and, if you pardon the pun, they are the most fleshed out characters in the book. They are humorous, though neither subtle nor very effective, in their attempts to bring Jeff and Britt together. The wait for their stories was well rewarded. The resolution of the courthouse battle was somewhat predictable, but satisfying, nevertheless.

The main problem I had was with the side plot of Brittany's "sex scandal". An unsubstantiated, anonymous accusation against Brittany of unethical behavior that could have been easily disproved somehow became a lengthy criminal case taken all the way to the state supreme court. Also, Jeffrey's gullibility over the claims of his ex-wife seemed a tad unrealistic.

On the whole, though, GATEKEEPER'S PROMISE is an entertaining book, especially for readers able to visualize while they read. It would make a wacky, romantic TV series.

In this second of the "Widow's Walk" series, the three ghostly widows are once again working to get together two people who are destined to love each other. This time, though, they must also face their own prejudices as they are assigned to match Quince Mendoza, a native of Columbia, now a prosecuting attorney in Tombstone, Arizona and Kari McCabe, a single mother of four-year-old Prissy. The youngest ghost, Faye, a product of antebellum
Southern upbringing, refuses to have anything to do with the match. To help her see the error of her ways, the Gatekeeper sends her to the deep South in 1937 as a young black woman. The lesson takes root and she returns to the group with a new attitude and new perspective on prejudice.

Quince is hiding out from the brother of a man he helped convict of drug trafficking, Emilio Rodriguez. When Emilio can't find Quince, he decides to go after Kari. Kari, an athletics coach and karate expert, manages to escape the first attempt to kidnap her. She confronts Quince and is determined to leave the old hacienda where they're staying until he convinces her that she and Prissy will be safer there  with the ghosts  than at some less well-protected place. She and Quince cannot deny the attraction they have for each other, but refuse to act on their building passions while Prissy is around. The widows give them some free time and send them on a picnic. They are ambushed and Quince is injured. While recovering, Prissy and Kari are kidnapped in separate incidents. It is only with the help of the widows and other ghosts that the three are reunited and Mendoza is captured.

Although I enjoyed the first book, this second book is much better, showing further development of the ghosts and their backgrounds and possible futures. While the main story concerning the two people being matched is good, it is the widows that carry the story. Gatekeeper's Challenge is a nice, light read, perfect for an afternoon at the beach. I'm looking forward to the third and finding out what happens with the widows.

Quince Mendoza is running for his life.  Quince is a prosecuting attorney
who is being hunted by Emilio Rodriguez, the brother of a man that he
prosecuted for drug trafficking.  Quince holes up at a boarding house in
Tombstone, Arizona, which is being run by Charlotte, Faye and
Abby....ghosts!  When gorgeous Kari McCabe and her daughter Prissy arrive
at the boarding house to stay, Quince knows he should leave before any
danger comes to these ladies, but Charlotte talks him out of it.  But
Quince still isn t sure because he knows that Emilio Rodriguez will stop at
nothing to get his revenge on Quince.

Kari McCabe can t help but be attracted to Quince Mendoza, no matter how
much she tries not to be.  Having such horrible taste in men in the past,
Kari hopes never to make the same mistakes again.  But being around Quince
brings Kari even  more danger than that to her heart, as someone keeps
trying to kidnap her.  Kari will do anything to keep herself and her
daughter, Prissy safe.   But is it safer in a house full of ghosts?   Will
Quince be safe from a madman?  How will Charlotte, Abby and Faye cope with
the dangerous elements added to their matchmaking this time around?

Lee Emory brings us a more serious tale with book 2 of the Widow s Walk
Trilogy, GATEKEEPER'S CHALLENGE.  In book 1, the Widows, Charlotte, Faye,
and Abby, pulled many antics while playing matchmakers.  In this tale they
continue to bring those that are destined to be together into each others
lives, but with the danger surrounding Quince, they have some doubts
whether to make this match,   that could put all of them in danger.  Ms.
Emory delves a deeper into the Widow s histories and brings the reader
closer to each of them.  Faye, one of the Widow s,  had some hard lesson s
to learn and to overcome in GATEKEEPER'S CHALLENGE that Ms. Emory wrote
with flourish and strength in her writing and to Faye herself.  I
thoroughly enjoyed the Widow s witty charms, their arguments, their snappy
comebacks, and getting to know them even more.

Kari s daughter, Prissy, added heart warming emotions and delights to GATEKEEPER'S CHALLENGE. Prissy plus the Widow s equals very entertaining reading.   Ms.  Emory
writes powerful love, danger, adventure, delightful characters, wily ghosts and some surprises along the way.  I look forward to book 3 of this Widows'  Walk Trilogy.
