Love Donor
To love or to hate is the question.

Rick loved her more than his life, for most of his life.  Jackie was meant to be his wife from the time they were children, but the ill-fated death of her beloved father persuaded her to marry Rick's best friend instead.

Now Jackie finds herself trapped in an unhappy marriage to an even unhappier man and is compelled at her husband's urging to beg Rick to give them a child that her husband cannot.

Ill-fate deals even nastier cards than Rick and Jackie ever dreamed, when a psycho plots to destroy the one thing destined to bind this couple against all odds.

Rick, Jackie and Craig have been close friends since childhood.  The trio become even closer when Rick moves in with Craig's family after his mother dies and his abusive father is sent to jail.
Rick and Jackie's childhood friendship matures into a love affair that ends when Rick decides to become a cop.  Jackie's father was a cop who died in the line of duty and she is unwilling to face a similar situation with Rick.  So instead, she impulsively marries Craig.
But Craig is no longer the boy he once was.  His steady addiction to alcohol will drastically affect both his marriage to Jackie and his friendship with Rick--ultimately destroying one of their lives completely.
This poignant book enthralled me from the start.  I became emotionally involved with these characters--especially when Craig and Jackie ask Rick to donate sperm for "their" child--and easily finished this book in order to find out just how things would turn out.

It was Jackie who knew the place that Rick fled to after his alcoholic,
abusive father, beat him, and it was Craig's parents who opened their
hearts to a frightened child, raising him as a second son.
Jackie loves Rick, and even as a little girl recognizes that he is the
one she will spend her life with. But her policeman father's violent death
leaves her shattered and bruised, and when a now grown Rick, joins the
force, she turns from him and seeks solace in Craig's arm. Craig who has
always accepted the future between his two best friends, jumps at the
chance to at last let his own love for Jackie shine, they are married-and
that's when the hell begins for all three of them.
Trying to make the best of bad marriage, Jackie and Craig beg for Rick's
help when they can not conceive a child. Still in love with Jackie, but
resigned to his role in their lives, Rick bows to her pleading. Using his
sperm, Jackie conceives, but it only causes more dis-harmony. Craig turns
to alcohol more and more as Jackie grows big with Rick's child. His
hatred for himself leads to tragic results that throw all three of them into
turmoil.
This is a wonderful book. I couldn't stop reading until I'd finished the
last word. I'm stingy with my four star ratings, but Love Donor deserves
everyone of the four. I highly recommend this emotional, roller-coaster
of a ride.
