As a widow Mattie Gordon has lived a pleasant but often solitary life as mother to Will Gordon and his men, cattle drivers who live at the secluded Gordon ranch between jobs. That is, until handsome bounty hunter Cyrus Braydon draws iron on her and demands to know the location of her son, producing a poster that proves Will is wanted, dead or alive, for cattle rustling…and murder.
Unable to believe him at first, Mattie ponders her son’s activities, and serious, painful doubts sink in. The bounty hunter rides away to track her son, and Mattie leaves the ranch soon after, desperate to get to Will first and convince him of God’s love and forgiveness before he is caught, or worse, killed while resisting capture.
In Boise City, Oklahoma, Mattie meets Cyrus again. When she learns she is being followed by someone who wants to stop her from finding her son, she decides to trust Cyrus to protect her from the unknown stranger, to lead her to Will, and to try to take her son alive.
When she is drawn to the quiet, good nature in Cyrus, Mattie finds her heart pulled in two opposing directions: to the son she raised and loves, and to the law-abiding man determined to bring Will down. God is a God of miracles, but how can He get them all through this?
Author Leach pens a unique story of unexpected twists, unforgettable one-liners, and an emotional wringer worthy of earplug laughter and a fistful of tissues. Even more, through the Godly, mothering character of Mattie, author Leach lifts the hope of mothers who worry over the faith of a child, and the hearts of women who suffer loneliness.
If this is you, you’ll find The Plight of Mattie Gordon heart-lifting, hope-giving; a treasure.

Jeanne Marie Leach’s The Plight of Mattie Gordon is the story of a mother torn between love for her son and the compelling need to do what’s right. Disappointed in her only child, facing hardships, and danger, all Mattie has left is her belief in God. Her unshakable faith helps her to carry on when it seems all hope is gone. An intriguing story with a captivating plot. If you like historical fiction, this one’s for you.

Up until the day Cyrus Braydon aimed a gun at her, Mattie Gordon thought she was living a safe, satisfactory life. But the bounty hunter is after her son and sports a wanted poster claiming ‘dead or alive.’ Could it be possible that her beloved Will is involved with cattle rustling, horse thievery, and murder? Her world is shaken to the core as she hastens to find and warn her son of the bounty hunter’s intentions.
Jeanne Marie Leach has written an unusual story of unconditional love that is thought provoking as well as gripping. This was a book I couldn’t put down, because there was so much at stake for her cast of characters.

THE PLIGHT OF MADDIE GORDON is a very well done historical romance. It held my interest from the beginning and didn’t let go. Mattie is a realistic character, as good as gold, and loving to her son and his friends. Cyrus is a bit rough around the edges, but as a bounty hunter, he’s perfect. And Will is realistically developed too.
The faith message is expertly woven in, and I could almost taste the dust on the old wagon trails as I read the book. Lovers of historical fiction are not going to want to miss this offering by Jeanie Marie Leach. Even though the book is published by a small press it is as good as some of the books published by larger houses. The cover is absolutely beautiful. $11.95. 179 pages.
