Words to Write By

I Deal in Hope
How do authors write, get their ideas and inspiration, keep going when problems—family or otherwise—overwhelm? Authors are as different as the books they write, each offering a different perspective on writing and being an author. This book brings together the experiences of a host of authors (many very well known), giving the reader not only inspiration, but also very real “how to's” as they struggle in that dream to become an author.
Each author does one thing more, brings us to the heart of their inspiration—Jesus Christ.
A good book to give that budding author, bring hope to a discouraged author or new inspiration for the author further along on the journey. With the scripture for each short chapter, this book makes a nice devotional to start the day.
Note of bias. I contributed to this book. Truth is, I am asked to contribute to any number of projects. Many never get to the publication stage. This one did. It did because it is good. That I don't know until I read it cover to cover. This one indeed is a book of value to inspire an author.

"Words to Write By" does exactly what it is supposed to do. It inspires. It encourages. It motivates. It lifts up hearts so it makes writers ready to write with enthusiasm. It touches us with God's own hand.
The book is awe-inspiring. Well known and loved authors like Robin Lee Hatcher tell us what we already knew in our hearts, but were afraid or unable to express. Once the thoughts were expressed, so eloquently and so simply - they jumped off the page and into my heart and head. They drove my pen. I will keep the e-book on my computer for a quick and uplifting reference. Thank you!"

Robin Bayne knows without words and inspirations to keep one motivated, there is not much hope to continue doing things one loves. She knows many authors keep quotes nearby their computer or working station for their own inspirations.
Sensitivity is something any writer discovers who bruises easily, and Robin knows with rejection this is often felt by writers all over. It has been around for a long time, even during the beginning of time. Just as many rejected the Bible verses, sensitivity is something that becomes a part of one’s life.
Writers have a way of touching upon the heart and often when they feel as if their words are just words, they get a nice thank you for giving them the strength to endure. By word of mouth, in magazines and books, and by such journeys, others read these words and feel comfort, support and love. A true writer crafts stories from the heart and wishes to reach out to others. They thank the Lord daily for giving them the opportunity to create tales that often make the world a better place in which to live.
With each short reflection there is an introduction verse from the Bible, in Words to Write By. The devotionals have a way of making the reader wonder why they never thought of it broken down that way or expressed in that manner. I like the method of the quotes from the Bible within each different essay, giving the reader time to reflect on what the Lord has delivered to us to read daily. After contacting many writers, Robin Bayne compiles an assortment of different essays that each has used as an inspiration for their own writings. The reflections have a way of giving hope, while making the word rejection, strength, making writers stronger.

Many authors use famous quotes or Scripture verses for motivation and inspiration. Some adorn computer monitors with them, others add them to e-mail signature lines, still others use them as the focal point of their website, and some writer’s do all three. Compiler Robin Bayne believes these quotes and Bible verses reflect the author’s personality and beliefs and “can serve as their “task-master, guidance counselor or just plain comforter.”
Baynes asked author’s to contribute their favorite quotes and Scripture verses for this compilation. Fifty-seven writers responded, such as Sally Stewart in Oregon, Christy and RITA award winner, Robin Lee Hatcher, and Christian Pen founder, Kathy Ide. Compilation guidelines also asked for brief descriptions of what motivated their choices.
Sally Stewart submitted Barbara Kingsolver’s quote on rejection. Rejections are “precious packages,” sent to the wrong address, to an editor who “can’t appreciate my work.” Kingsolver encourages writers to “continue looking for the right address.”
Stewart adds writers must accept rejection as a part of doing business—that rejections are not personal. To prevent rejections, study guidelines, magazine samples, book catalogs, and stay current with the marketplace. She cautions, although writers moved into the electronic age, some publisher’s embrace the new technology, while others do not.
Beth Ziarnik questioned her publication dream. The dream had turned into a wrestling match, similar to what she imagined wrestling with a “writhing anaconda” might be. Then she read a hand written note card on her desk, “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love and of a sound mind”—2 Timothy 1:7. (NKJV) Recognizing the enemy’s work, she realized she wasn’t too old or too inexperienced. She marched to the computer, prayed and “booted up.”
Christian children’s book author, Kevin Scott Collier cautions, “Never be a selfish writer, a boastful writer, or a jealous writer.” Depend on God to open doors and provide opportunities to spread His love to others through the written word. “Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things.”—1 Corinthians 13:7 (NAS) reminds him his work will be “fruit for others to consume.”
Fifty-seven devotions divided into five sections include topics of encouragement, motivation, persistence, rejection, publishing, networking, success, sustenance, and the last topic “Write for Him.” The devotions capture all aspects of the writing experience. I enjoyed learning what other writers dealt with. Reading their choice of quotes and Scripture verses increased my own collection of inspiring thoughts. The only flaw in this book is the lack of index to match page numbers to contributors for easy reference. Even so, this makes a wonderful gift for writers.
