Ranger Captain Tom Daniels has a chance meeting with an old friend, Bob Cory, in the south Texas settlement of Collinstown. Cory has been in Mexico and now he is back to reclaim the life he had left behind but his notorious past is close on his heels in the form of a cold killer. Daniels and Cory are immediately forced into a deadly gun battle with the killer and his gang.

The renewed friendship between these two men, both seasoned veterans of the Indian wars and the Mexican War, carry them headlong into the bloody violence of pre-Civil War Texas. Both men will be forced to decide where their loyalties lie in this time when Texans are deeply divided and violently pitted against one another over the issues of slavery and secession. It is a story of retribution, redemption, love, and courage.

Robert Neal has thoroughly researched and presented an authentic history to his readers while successfully weaving his fictional characters into the backdrop of what was pre-Civil War Texas.  Neal remains true to the reality of violence and death that was common in the harsh conditions and nature of the job of an early Texas Ranger yet readers will be surprised to find unexpected tenderness and romance, heartbreaking sadness and humor that will only serve to endear them to the colorful characters in the book.  The reader will appreciate the author’s exceptional gift of vivid description that will make them feel as though they are there.  “Collinstown” is truly an easy-to-read page-turner and will leave readers wanting more.

The novel follows the intertwining lives of a current and former Texas Ranger just at the outbreak of the Civil War. Bob Cory, the elder former Ranger, is on his way back to Texas to restart his life serenely after a violent past, where he has a chance encounter with an old friend and colleague in current Ranger Tom Daniels, a man on the verge of  divided loyalty to state and country.

It’s a captivating read, with literary debts owed to Larry McMurtry (Lonesome Dove) and Cormac McCarthy (All the Pretty Horses, No Country for Old Men) and historical nods given to the work of Texas historian T.R. Fehrenbach.
