Maquiladora Murders
by
Sydnie Goodell
Thousands of illegal immigrants converge on the border towns in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California every day.
Maquiladoras (twin plants) offer employment to those who opt not to cross the border. Of those who do come into the United States, some are caught and deported, some die in the desert heat, and some disappear and are never heard from again.
Is the Maquiladora a harbinger of a better way of life, or are the illegals being duped into thinking so?

This reviewer found this an interesting tale with many fascinating plots within the main plot. Filled with man's greed and cruelty to those they believe to be beneath them, and revenge that isn't always sweet.
Ernesto Garcia slips into the United States from Mexico with high hopes. He believes he will have a better life and his dream of never being hungry again will be fulfilled. He's in luck when Butch Flaherty befriends him along the way. It was lucky for Butch, too, because when he least expects it, Ernesto is able to return the favor.
Ernesto learns to speak English and begins work at Dragoon Industries. His honesty and hard work are rewarded by promotion to manager at the companies Maquiladora (twin plant) in Naco. When he's killed, nobody seems interested in finding the reason.
When another company officer is found murdered a few years later, Sheriff L.B. Sterling and his deputies begin to dig deeply into the employees. They follow the investigation through a maze of red herrings and begin to worry that the disappearance of some local Mexicans may have a connection. There are strange things happening at the hospital on the hill, money arrives in bank accounts from thin air, but what is the connection tying everything together?
Based on an article read in a newspaper it's an interesting story, with an overabundance of dead bodies to keep the reader interested.
