REVIEWS
A change of careers sounds exciting, but sometimes excitement is the last thing you want.  "The Lesson Plan" is the story of Robert Klayman, substitute teacher turned private investigator as his career shift finds him plummeted right into a drug ring conspiracy where it's not just drugs or the wrongdoing, it's also murder.  Through it all, Klayman may find his true calling, and "The Lesson Plan" proves to be an intriguing and fine read, highly recommended.

Robert Klayman, a substitute high school teacher in Los Angeles, is facing a midlife crisis after failing to achieve his hopes of a high salary or a successful career. He makes the decision to become a private detective. He is swept up in an investigation of a criminal drug wing that is working in the Los Angeles School DHs His investigation leads to Ms. Briggs, who is murdered one week after her request to be transferred to another school. He has to travel from the streets of Los Angeles to the casinos of Las Vegas to the Arizona desert before he can end the troubles.

This is a suspenseful detective story beside being the story of one man's midlife crisis and his struggle to cope with it. The plot is well constructed with much action. The author gives a vivid portrait of life in Los Angeles with its many problems.

First-time-novelist G.J. Prager’s The Lesson Plan takes readers on a fast-paced adventure through Los Angeles, offering unique perspectives on its inhabitants and the human pursuit of success. I loved Prager’s short chapters, snappy commentary, and unique plot line. I’ve never read a murder mystery before that took place in the ranks of a prominent school district! Prager, a drama and literature teacher at a Los Angeles school, provides insight only someone on the inside can describe.

While I thoroughly enjoyed the story, I found the underage, teacher-student sex to be inappropriate and repulsive. There’s too much of that in current events today to make it “cutting edge” and “witty.” I hope that in his future novels, Prager focuses more on character development and knock-down mystery and leaves bad romance alone. It’s not his strong suit.

The Lesson Plan was a fabulous first novel and I’ll definitely try another book by this author.
